Monsieur, - J’ai eu l’honneur aujourd’hui de recevoir, puis de porter à l’attention de son Excellence votre lettre du 13 courant. En réponse à ces concitoyens qu’une pareille mesure intéresse, je suis mandé de vous informer, qu’attentif à l’actualité, son Excellence a déjà prévu l’objet qui les occupe en ordonnant depuis peu la mise sur pied et l’équipement d’une force municipale auxiliaire adaptée à l’urgence de l’heure et apte, l’espère-t-elle, à contrer les desseins des mécontents et maintenir la paix publique. À ceux des habitants de Montréal qui désireraient dès maintenant se manifester pour défendre la cause de l’ordre public, ceci leur offrira l’occasion d’appuyer les instances établies dans leur effort en vue de garantir l’obéissance aux lois, ainsi que la protection des personnes et des biens. Sir, - I have had the honor to receive this day your letter of the 13th instant, respecting the formation under the sanction of the Governor-in-Chief of a Volunteer force for the protection of the City of Montreal, and having submitted the same for His Excellency’s consideration, I am directed to acquaint you in reply for the information of these citizens who are interested in such a measure that His Excellency, alive to passing events, has already anticipated the object they have in view, in the direction he has lately given for the organization and equipment of an auxiliary municipal force to an extent commensurate with the exigencies of the times, and adequate, as he trusts to frustrate the designs of all disaffected, and to preserve public tranquillity. This will present to such of the inhabitants of the City of Montreal as may be desirous of now coming forward to aid in promoting the cause of good order, an opportunity of affording the services of the constituted authorities in these efforts to secure obedience to the laws and protection to persons and property.
